Fish Posture is typically considered an intermediate or advanced posture; however, this posture can be done at any level as long as one proceeds with caution and listens to their body at every step. This posture stretches the psoas, a key muscle in the hip flexors (red chakra), that is believed to be linked to depression and anxiety if it gets tight according to traditional yoga teachings. Therefore, Fish Posture, along with other deep hip opening yoga postures, is great for those who struggle with depressed or anxious feelings off the mat. In addition to stretching the hips, Fish Pose also stretches the abdominal muscles (orange and yellow chakras) associated with true joy and creative fulfillment, plus the chest (green chakra) associated with liberating the spirit and connecting one to their heart’s deepest calling. This powerful posture is incredible for strengenthing one’s body on a physical level and reviving one’s spirit on a mental, spiritual and emotional level.
