If you’re stressing out over finals and constantly cramming for the big test, take a break from the text book. A new study suggests maybe you should head to the essential oils aisle at Whole Foods. According to the research, the scent of rosemary can help improve your memory.
According to researchers at Northumbria University in the UK, smelling rosemary essential oil can enhance your working memory, which means it could help you ace your finals. Does this mean it’s time to buy defusers for teacher appreciation day?
Inspired by findings that showed adults have better cognitive function when smelling rosemary, researchers sought to see if the oil had the same effect on young people by asking them to play memory games. Some of the 40 young people in the study were in rooms that had rosemary essential oil dispersed throughout, while others were just in scent-free rooms. The young people in rooms with the rosemary scent performed significantly better on memory games than those in rooms without the scent, specifically when it came to recalling words. And since researchers say not having a good working memory is linked to poor academic performance, having a scent that can enhance that memory could mean better academic performance.
“We do know that poor working memory is related to poor academic performance and these findings offers a possible cost effective and simple intervention to improve academic performance in children,” researcher Dr. Mark Moss said in a statement. “The time is ripe for large-scale trials of aroma application in education settings.”
Researchers aren’t sure why exactly rosemary essential oil seems to boost memory performance, but honestly the reason doesn’t matter so much when you consider the end result. If we’re only one essential oil away from straight A’s, we’re definitely not questioning it.
